Theban Or Witch's Script
The Theban (or Witches) script/alphabet is widely used by traditional Wiccans and witches both ritually and in their books of shadows. Basically the Theban alphabet is used as a substitution cipher thus hiding the original text in symbols. The script is a straightforward substitution of the standard alphabet with the exceptions that "i" and "j" are identical, as are "u" and "v". The purpose or reasons for using the script is usually to encrypt a message, spell, or text so that its meaning is not obvious to a casual onlooker, or to give a mystical quality to the text to enable more effective magickal workings or spells. The script is reputed to have been invented by Honorius of Thebes. Thebes was a city in ancient Greece hence the often used "Runes of Honorius." However, there is no credible supporting evidence to this fact. The use of the Theban script by traditional Wiccans is based on its usage by the founder of modern Wicca, Gerald Gardner.

Futhark Runes |
The Futhark Runes are based on the Elder Futhark alphabetic script that was used by the Norse peoples (Vikings) of Northern Europe and are about 2000 years old. As well as being used as a written alphabet, the rune symbols were used for magic and divination. As the Roman alphabet became the preferred script of most of Europe, Runes as an alphabetic script fell into disuse, but their forms and meanings were preserved in inscriptions and manuscripts. One major characteristic which distinguishes a runic alphabet from other alphabets is that each letter, or rune, has a meaning. For example "eh", "bee", and "cee" are meaningless sounds denoting the first three letters in our alphabet but the names of the first three runes, "fehu", "uruz", and "žurisaz" are actual words in the Germanic/Norse languages, meaning "cattle", "aurochs", and "giant", respectively. Runes have long been held to have magical and pagan religious significance as well and they have been used throughout the centuries for divinatory readings and to create magical spells. Today, runes have gained immense popularity as a means of divination having been rediscovered as a symbolic system. Some believe they are an alternative to Tarot cards for giving insight and foretelling the future. They have much to teach us about a way of life that was more intimately connected to the natural world than our own. Some practitioners use a 25th rune called Wyrd in additional to the original set. The Elder Futhark Runes are split into three Aetts: |

Futhark Runes - Spreads
| When using the Futhark runes you need to pick the runes from a bag (traditionally made of sackcloth or animal skin) and place them in a set spread to answer your questions. Unlike the Witch's runes, which are cast in entirety, the Futhark is similar to tarot in so much that only a certain number of stones (depending on the spread) are read. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Fehu: Cattle Keywords: Prosperity, money, physical and financial concerns, goals, promotion, self-esteem, karma. Meanings: Fehu is the day-to-day reality of our lives and the catalyst that awakens us to what lies beyond. It represents what we think we are seeking, which often bears no resemblance to what we will eventually find.Fehu reminds us that any spiritual journey must have a sound footing in our physical situation. The first step in breaking away from this situation and starting a new journey is to be able to see what is possible. |

Ansuz: Odin Keywords: Leadership, justice, shaman, clairvoyant, balance of mind and body. Meanings: Ansuz is a rune of balance. Many people choose to remain at this point in their journey. It is a point of power and can be quite tempting to remain where you are. Odin has learned the lessons of the first three runes, thus gaining the wisdom to rule wisely, but this is really only another beginning. Odin still needs that spiritual and emotional connection to become a truly great leader. |

Wunjo: Glory Keywords: Reward, success, recognition, joy, achievement, contentment. Meanings: Wunjo is the last rune of the first aett and represents the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. It is a very positive rune but yet another place where people can get stalled on their journey. There are still more lessons to be learned and the journey must go on. Staying here is tempting, it seems like paradise after all the hard work. But it is just an illusion and only temporary. |

Hagalaz: Hail Keywords: Sudden loss, ordeal, destruction, disaster, clearance, testing, karmic lesson, drastic change. Meanings: This rune is like the Tower in the Tarot and provides a wake-up call. Hagalaz is only a negative rune if you choose to view it that way, and refuse to learn its lessons. It marks both a beginning and an end, and destroys the complacency of wunjo. If things are going well and you're beginning to take life for granted, Hagalaz is the slap that wakes you up! |

Sowulo: Sun Keywords: Success, positive energy, power, health, activity, fertility. Meanings: Sowulo marks the end of the second aett, and marks a successful completeion of this part of the journey. Rest for a moment and enjoy the sun, then use its energy to move on. This is movement from choice and is not forced. |

All the lessons learned along the way must now be integrated into our lives, or become meaningless. |
Bindrunes | ||
Bindrunes, very simply, are two or more rune symbols joined together to form a powerful magickal sigil. These runes are ideally suited for use as talismans or for spellwork. The possible combinations are almost limitless. Probably the most popular bindrune design in Viking times was the simple cross shape, which had a rune at each of the four points of the cross. This particular design is ideal as the points of the cross can equate to compass points meaning that bindrunes can be designed to take into account the elements and directionc that feature so strongly in magick. Another very popular design was the eight spoked wheel. Runes were written not only at the end of each spoke, but also along the spoke. Again the elements and directions can be used if desired. A selection of bindrunes featuring both cross and wheel configurations is shown below:

Witch's Runes | |||
Most Witches are aware that runes can be used for divination. Most practitioners have seen or used the well known Futhark (or Viking) runes, but did you know that there is actually a set of eight pictgraphic runes solely for use by Witches? The Witch's runes consist of eight pictographic stones: The Sun, moon, crossed spears, black rune, wave, ear of corn, rings and the birds. Many Witches use both the Witch's runes and the Futhark runes when divination is called for. To use the Witch's Runes for divination purposes the runes are cast in the manner of dice, casting all of them at once. A rune is only relevant to a reading if it falls face up, ignore any that are face down. The leading (or most important) rune in a reading is the one furthest from you. If all the runes are face-down, you are not yet meant to know the answer. You should not attempt another reading for at least one week. Although fewer in number than the more widely known Futhark runes, many people find the Witch's runes much easier to use as they are somewhat simpler to interpret
